Cat Dermatology
Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians. (2022). [Dermatology]. Brought to you by OAVT Seminar.
EGC- Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex
- Allergy related
- A itchy cat will lick its self with their barbed tongue which leads to self trauma
- Inflammatory cells come to the rescue along with eosinophilic cells reacting creating eosinophilic plaques
- Often on the belly but can appear anywhere
- Papules --> little red bumps can turn into big boulders
- Miliary Dermatitis --> Chances are there is an underlying allergy
- Texture: millet seeds
CLINICAL PATTERNS
- Secondary infections caused by food allergies, compromised skin barrier and or a compromised immune system
- Then leads to infections
- Infections are always secondary no such thing as primary infections
○ Folliculitis
○ Pododermatitis- paw infections
○ Otitis externa/interna- ear infections
○ Yeast Dermatitis
Why?
- Pruritus- Itchy? Makes them predisposed to secondary infections
- Non- Pruritic Alopecia- Fur loss but not Itchy ?
- Autoimmune/immune mediated skin disease? Makes them more susceptible to skin disease
- Keratinization defects
- Lumps, Bumps and draining tracts
- Other weird stuff
ONLY SO MANY REASONS TO BE ITCHY
- Infestation
- Secondary infections (Bacterial/fungal)
- Adverse reaction to something (Food or environmental Allergies)
- Skin Cancer Epithelial Trophic lymphoma(Cutaneous T cell lymphoma/ mycosis)
- Older Patients are more vulnerable
VENTRUM AND FLEXURE SURFACE FOR ATOPY (Food or Environmental Allergies)
- Very Similar to humans
- Run into trouble at the flexure spots
- Classic areas in Atopic symptoms
MAPPING OUT ITCHINESS IN CATS
- Non food & Non Flea--> Environmental Allergy
- Itchiness focuses on head and abdomen
- Flea Allergies
- Abdomen, Rump, Tail --> Food Allergies
- Head, neck and sometimes abdomen
- Non Pruritic Alopecia
- Lost hair but not itchy
- Check for Symmetry Symmetric--> Endocrine (thyroid/cushings)
- Mess up hair growth cycles, hair is trapped in resting face
- Over production of cortisol= Allergies are an internal problem
§ Asymmetric--> Dermatophytosis (ringworm infection without itchiness)
§ Pattern Baldness--> Genetic
