Perceived vs. Actual Pet Health: Debunking Myths and Understanding Risks- Part3
1. The Superficial Fantasy of Modern Pet Ownership: I love animals! This breed is my dream dog! We will naturally bond like in tiktok or the movies! The care is super easy because the Facebook group, The influencer taught me everything I need to know; I know a lot of pet owners- The care is easy — I’ve done my research.
Hate to burst objective goals and dreams but None of that equals readiness; None of that feeds, trains, rehabilitates, pays vet bills; or shows up at 3 a.m. when something is wrong; None of that will move forward pet advocacy; and it most certainly won't improve pet care influence.
Liking animals is not the same as being responsible for one.
Pet ownership without context, Unrealistic breeder sales pitch, the continual speciesism which fuels a designer dog perspective, Social Media has Replaced Reality — and Pets Pay the Price of human ignorance.
Influencers, Facebook groups, Breeders, Normalizing the wrong care and Highlight-reel content sell a curated fantasy:
- Cute moments
- Instant bonding
- Minimal struggle
- “Low maintenance” narratives
- Breed aesthetics over training and medical care reality
What they don’t show:
- Resource guarding
- Separation anxiety
- Reactivity
- Chronic illness at early ages- due to human ignorance
- Financial strain
- Lifestyle disruption
- The emotional labor of long-term care
- The reality behind the scenes- allergy medication, vet appointments, internal illness
- Proper owner accountability
Breed Obsession Is Not Advocacy
- Pets are not content.
- They are not accessories.
- They are not proof of identity or compassion.
Choosing a pet based on:
- Trends
- Looks
- Popular reels
- Aesthetic lifestyles
Breed traits are not suggestions, DIY projects, kid toys/ gifts. They are needs:
- Energy levels
- Mental stimulation
- Drive
- Vocalization
- Grooming burden
- Health risks
- Training demands
Ignoring that because the breed is “your dream” turns the animal into the one making compromises — for its entire life.
Real pet ownership is not “they fit into my life.”
It is the advocacy of pet shelters:
- I restructure my life around their welfare
- I adapt when they age, get sick, or change
- I sacrifice convenience, money, time, and comfort
- You are not roommates. You are not equals in power.
- They cannot leave.
- They cannot choose better care.
- They cannot advocate for themselves.
That responsibility is yours.
Pet advocacy is not just volunteering for your gain of inspiration or feeling sorry for animals, rather whatever exposure to pets you get you learn from them and grow to a more responsible, proactive accountable owner- its means encouraging others or being the owner that:
- Addressing behavior, not punishing it
- Paying for medical care you didn’t plan for
- Changing diet when symptoms appear
- Training even when it’s hard
- Enrichment even when you’re tired
- Grooming, dental care, and preventive care even when it’s “inconvenient”
- Making decisions based on their needs, not your image
If you take everything they give — affection, loyalty, companionship —and give back neglect, denial, or aesthetics-based care, that is not love- That is exploitation covered as "love"
The Hard Truth: Pets Struggle Quietly
- Animals don’t complain.
- They adapt.
- They mask pain.
- They deteriorate slowly.
So when ownership is shallow, pets don’t “fail” — they fade, trying to survive in an environment built for human fantasy, not animal reality.
Real ownership is:
- Unsexy
- Unfiltered
- Expensive no matter the age
- Inconvenient
- Emotionally demanding
- Long-term
- It lasts until their last breath, not until it stops being fun.
Bottom Line
If your vision of pet ownership is built on:
- Trends
- Aesthetics
- Social validation
- Minimal sacrifice
- Making your kids happy
- A long time "goal"
Animals don’t need admirers, expensive clothing, Fancy collars, that is what leads to shelter over population, abandoned pets, and unintentional bad quality of life for pets.
The more we humans understand the true meaning of pet love and advocacy the more we can change the system and unfair demand that has been created🐾
